What is CREDO Science?
The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) represents a collaborative citizen science initiative focused on the global analysis of cosmic-ray data. This project aims to investigate extremely extended cosmic-ray phenomena, termed Cosmic-Ray Ensembles (CRE), which remain undetectable by individual detectors or observatories. Traditionally, cosmic-ray research has concentrated on identifying single air showers; thus, the exploration of CRE presents a largely uncharted area of study. The successful observation of CRE holds significant implications for cosmology, fundamental particle interactions, and ultra-high energy astrophysics.
An integral component of the CREDO project is the CREDO Detector mobile application. This app utilizes smartphone cameras to detect cosmic-ray particles, effectively transforming the collective network of users worldwide into a single cosmic-ray telescope spanning the Earth. Importantly, all application code is publicly accessible through our GitHub repository.
CREDO operates as an open citizen science project, ensuring that all collected data is available to the public. Schools and institutions from five continents are actively participating in this initiative. Those interested in joining the program or contributing ideas are encouraged to reach out to us via email at [email protected].
